My Chance Encounter with Sir David Frost

In the summer of 2007, Jim and I were traveling across Russia on the Trans Siberia Railroad from Vladivostok to St. Petersburg. One major stop was Moscow. We got up early to go to Red Square and the Kremlin to enjoy them before the crowds arrived. The Moscow River runs adjacent to the Kremlin’s high brick walls and towers. To get a different perspective in our pictures showing the Kremlin and St. Basil’s Cathedral as well as boats plying the river, we crossed a bridge. On our way we saw an English speaking gentleman with an entire film crew at the bridge’s center. We were already hassled by the local police and security people for taking photos with a tripod in this area, so we were curious not only to know who this person was, but also why they were not getting harassed like us.

To our great surprise the English speaking gentleman was Sir David Frost. We stood and watched as he taped the introduction to his upcoming television show in which he was going to interview Academy Award winning actress Helen Mirren for her role in “The Queen” and the last Soviet Prime Minister Mikhail Gorbachev. From his introduction we learned Helen Mirren was in Moscow because she recently learned about her family’s Russian ancestry and he also planned to speak with Gorbachev about the “new” Russia.

With the new upcoming film “Frost/Nixon” based on David Frost’s historical interview with President Nixon due in theaters on 26 December, I thought this would be the perfect time to post my images of Sir David Frost in Moscow.
